How much does it cost?
The Australian Psychological Society recommended rate for clinical psychology services is $251 for a 50 minute therapy session. Our fees are lower than this. You may also be able to claim a portion of your fee through Medicare or your Private Health Fund. Please contact us for further information regarding our fee schedule.
What methods of payment are accepted?
We accept cash, EFTPOS, Mastercard and Visa payments only.
Do I need a referral?
No, you don’t need a referral to attend an appointment with a psychologist. Many people make the decision to see a psychologist themselves without consulting a GP or other health professional. You may, however, be eligible for a rebate through Medicare and if you want to access this rebate you will need a referral from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician.
Can I claim some of the session fees back?
Yes, you may be able to claim some of the fees back through Medicare or your Private Health Fund
All psychologists at Dr Amy Talbot & Associates are accredited by Medicare to provide services under the “Better Access to Mental Health” scheme. This scheme allows patients to receive a rebate of $124.50 per session with a clinical psychologist or $84.80 with a clinical psychology registrar for a maximum of 10 sessions per calendar year.
To be eligible for the Medicare rebate you need a referral letter from a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician which states that you are being referred under the scheme and indicates the number of sessions they are referring you for. Your GP will also need to prepare a Mental Health Care Plan for you and lodge this with Medicare. It is good practice to book a longer consultation with your GP to allow time to adequately discuss your concerns and to prepare the treatment plan. Not all diagnoses or concerns are covered under the scheme so you will need to discuss with your GP whether the scheme is suitable for you.
Please bring your paperwork (i.e., the Mental Health Care Plan and referral letter) to your appointment, as sessions can only be claimed under Medicare after your psychologist receives the referral. After 6 sessions you will need to go back to your GP for a review in order to access the additional 4 sessions for that calendar year. Your psychologist will remind you when you have claimed 6 sessions under the scheme. For your convenience, Dr Amy Talbot & Associates is able to provide immediate Medicare rebate claims at the time of your appointment.

Private Health Funds
If you belong to a Private Health Fund you may be able to claim a rebate for psychological services. The circumstances under which you can claim and the amount you will receive back varies from fund to fund so it is best to check with your provider directly to get the most accurate information. Dr Amy Talbot & Associates is a HICAPS provider, allowing you to access your health fund rebate immediately after your appointment. Please note that you cannot claim from both Medicare and your Health Fund for the same session.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
We understand that occasionally appointments need to be cancelled or rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances. We request that you provide at least 48 hours notice (i.e., two business days) if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment to allow time for the appointment to be offered to another patient. If less than 48 hours notice is given and we cannot fill your appointment from our cancellation list then a cancellation fee will apply. It is important to note that Medicare and Private Health Funds do not provide rebates for cancelled appointments.
